How are independent voices beating mainstream media to the story, amplifying their message, and shedding crucial light in times of crisis? How are independent journalists prodding mainstream media to cover issues they might otherwise ignore?
DTFF hosted a welcome lunch for filmmakers, actors and industry guests. I spoke to the attendees, among which included, Salma Hayek Pinault, Adel Imam and Yosra, DTFF’s President of the Jury.
Speaking on the opening day of the Abu Dhabi Circle Conference, Tarek Ben Ammar, the renowned Tunisian film financier/producer, urged Arab media professionals of their duty to get their points of view out to the world through film and TV. I spoke to him about the current state of TV in the Middle East.
I moderated a discussion of the film with participants of the National Democratic Institute’s Young Womens Academy 2009 who watched a screening of Yael Luttwaks’ film, A Slim Peace.
Director Julian Schnabel’s Miral is the moving story of a girl growing up in Palestine following the 1948 Nakba. I met with Schnabel, lead actress, Frieda Pinto, and writer Rula Jebreal, to discuss the film ahead of it’s red carpet screening at DTFF.

I was on a panel hosted by the Committee to Protect Journalists at Columbia Univ to discuss the role, impact and future of social media around the world, from Egypt to Iran to China, with Rebecca MacKinnon, Sheila Coronel, Nazila Fathi, and Danny O’Brien.
